Dog and cat age in human years

Choose a species and enter a whole-number age from 1 to 16 years. The dog chart applies only to medium-sized dogs weighing 21–50 lb (≈ 9.5–22.7 kg).

For dogs, confirm the medium size category used by the source. Other sizes and ages outside the chart are not covered. Ask your veterinarian about your pet’s individual ageing.

Method and limitations

This tool reads the AVMA chart directly, without interpolation or extrapolation. For ages 1–16, cats correspond to 15, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 68, 72, 76 and 80 human years; medium-sized dogs correspond to 15, 24, 28, 32, 36, 42, 47, 51, 56, 60, 65, 69, 74, 78, 83 and 87. Breed and weight affect ageing. This is an approximate comparison, not a medical assessment or a prediction of lifespan. No life stage is inferred from this chart.
